Website Review: Blogger.com

Blogger.com is a totally free blog service application hosted by Google. Originally Blogger.com was launched by Pyra Labs in 1999 and maintained the site until Google bought Blogger.com in 2003. The Pyra Labs funded Blogger.com through onscreen ads to its blog and some paid features to its members. However, when Google bought the application from Pyra Labs, the application became totally free with all its features. The onscreen ads were also disabled.

Below are some of the notable features of Blogger.com

  • You can use Blogger and all of its features using your Google ID.
  • Blogger or Google will host your own domain when you don’t have one (i.e. www.yoursite.blogspot.com). Blogger give you an option however to use your top level domain if you have it (i.e. www.yoursite.com). In this case, blogger will still host your blog and your files.
  • Picasa is used by Blogger to store photos or images uploaded in your blog. You are allotted a total of 1 GB per user.
  • To classify and group your Blogger posts and access them easier, Blogger uses their ‘labels’ features. This is relatively the same to Wordpress ‘categories.’
  • Blogger offers a comment feature to your posts wherein you have the option whether to auto approved comments or moderate them by yourself.
  • Blogger offers an optional navigation bar at the top of the screen wherein you can explore or surf for other blogs hosted by Blogger.
  • Your readers and fans can follow you by an optional widget made by Blogger called Followers. Here, readers who follow you can easily see the new posts you made in your blog.
  • Blogger provides different templates for your blog to choose from made by the Blogger theme. However, you can also import or upload a new template made by you or other designer.
  • Blogger offers a fully customizable CSS/HTML editing to your profile layout and widgets. These enable you to make some minor or major tweaks in the design and looks of your blog. See the following sites to see how customizable Blogger is. Site 1. Site 2. Unlike in Wordpress.com, this feature is totally free and does not require you to pay any upgrade fee to avail.
  • Blogger enable all its users to insert HTML or JavaScript to its pages or blogs. These languages are helpful in installing ads programs and other applications such as subscription forms.
  • Blogger just recently launched their Pages feature which offers Static Pages to its member’s blogs.
  • Blogger have a built in sitemap and feeds. To access it type this in your URL bar: wwww.yoursite.blogspot.com/robots.txt

Even though Blogger is not a totally open source application, we can see the continuous growth of blogger in the blogosphere. Though Blogger has its own limitation when compared to Wordpress.org and Joomla powered sites which are paying for site hosting, Blogger still managed to provide a free, efficient, reliant and personalized blogs to all of its users.
